Co-creating Useful and Usable Climate Intervention Simulations

Agenda Track

Friday, April 12, 2024, 9am - noon MST

Desired outputs from breakout session:

  • Discuss the most useful near term SDM-involved scenarios and configurations for initial development, including focus on single interventions (such as SAI) and resulting impacts and policy actions/alliances
  • Discuss most useful long-term SDM-involved scenarios and configurations, including combinations of multiple interventions and resulting impacts, and actions/alliances

Agenda Track

Thursday, April 11 1 2024, 9am - 4pm MST

Plenary and Panel objectives:

  • Participants gain understanding of objectives and approach of new Societal Dynamic Model (SDM) component for CESM (afternoon)
  • Participants develop an understanding of the uses and limitations of ESM output from the perspectives of a variety of users
  • Participants receive additional information about salient impacts given certain CI strategies and their projected changes to climate drivers
  • Participants provide input about the potential influence of climate impacts on CI policies for SDM prototype development.

Desired outputs from breakout session:

  • Identification of impacts that are most important and relevant for users’ work and that are central to the discussed uses from breakout session discussions on day 1
  • Understanding of the relevant dimensions of the phenomena of interest (e.g., extreme temperature and precipitation, tropical cyclones, ice sheet seasonality) and how these dimensions (i.e., magnitude, frequency, duration, thresholds, and spatial extent) might be adequately measured and interpreted for usability of output

Past Agenda Details Below

Wednesday, April 10 2024, 9am - 5pm MST

Plenary objectives:

  • Participants become familiar with the GCR project, their roles, and the role of workshop in relation to engagement and usability of products/results
  • Participants understand climate intervention techniques and their salient impacts subject to investigation in the GCR project
  • Participants understand CESM and details of the CCIS model configuration and limitations

Desired outputs from breakout session:

  • Identification of model uncertainties, inadequacies, and errors that are most important to quantify and communicate from the user’s perspective
  • Identification of thresholds for uncertainties, inadequacies, and errors that impact usability
  • Identification of potential uses of model outputs and contexts in which they will be applied
